Bloom Begins
Although it's not haiga, I want to share this lovely Ukiyo-e print which seems to borrow the spirit of haiku:
Seasonal reference (kigo): iris for early summer,
Single moment in time,
Nature and human harmony,
Visual restraint instead of explanation.
Ogata Gekkō (1859–1920) was working during the ‘opening to the West’ late Edo/Meiji bijin-ga, late 19th century. The traditional ukiyo-e style print, with the combination of a loose calligraphic signature, the red seal (hokka), the painterly and atmospheric print, and muted, watercolor-like pallette.“A Beauty with Irises” (likely from the series comparing women to seasonal flowers.) Bijin hana kurabe – shōbu - Japanese iris, associated with early summer.
