I don’t think I had any true sense of displacement in my youth, just different levels of awkwardness. Even when I lived abroad at 16, in a culture I barely comprehended, I could still feel a tether to a distant home. Now with my parents in their nineties I’ve become increasingly uneasy with the certain knowledge of a final cast of a line that might either set me adrift or on a voyage..
